Derek Williams

Derek Williams combines mixed materials of pastel, pencil and acrylic to create densely layered and richly coloured paintings. Each painting begins as a group portrait, of family and friends significant to Derek.

As the portraits develop the figures morph into their surroundings and become camouflaged within a complex patchwork of colour, shapes and lines. Derek frequently works on a large, ambitious scale and documents his painting practice through stop motion and photography, capturing the process of the portraits merging into their abstract scenery.
