Artist Spotlight: Chandrakant Patel

Discover the ideas and inspirations driving this month’s featured artist

In our June edition of Artist Spotlight, we are excited to feature Chandrakant Patel whose showcase opened this month. This programme highlights the practices of ActionSpace artists, offering a glimpse into their work and creative process.

In a darkly lit room an artist holds artwork in front of them, covering their face. Abstract paintings hang behind and projected art floods the scene.

Solo

ActionSpace presents Solo, a site specific installation of recent works by artist Chandrakant Patel created over the last year in ActionSpace studio at Studio Voltaire.

Chandrakant’s distinctive practice seamlessly blends painting and drawing, creating dynamic, multi-layered works on both acetate and paper. His approach is intuitive, building intricate contours with delicate, fluid lines and loose brushstrokes. Using inks, acrylics, and pens, he crafts a distinct style that merges abstract forms with emerging colours and patterns. These elements often evoke the symbolism of traditional Hindu Mandalas, reflecting the artist’s deep connection to his Indian heritage.

Red, white, yellow, and black markings and swirls of paint on brown paper.

Frequently, Chandrakant presents his works as series, grouping them into immersive wall collages. These evolving arrangements transform into site-specific installations, as he continually explores new configurations, seeking fresh connections between individual pieces. He then photographs each layout, getting up close with the camera to capture the detail. Chandrakant himself is then photographed with his work; a sense of ritual is reinforced through Chandrakant’s interactions with the final artworks and the wall collages. He combines singing with a moment of sacred performance to honour both the artwork and the occasion.

About the Artist

Chandrakant Patel, a resident artist at our Studio Voltaire space since 2004, creates vibrant, large-scale wall collages that combine painting, drawing and sacred performance. His practice blends rich colour, layered linework and ritualistic gestures, drawing on traditional Hindu Mandalas to evoke a deep sense of spirituality and connection.

Working across multiple pieces at once, Chandrakant builds and reconfigures his compositions over time, exploring the relationships between artworks through photography and installation.

Recent exhibitions include Open House at Studio Voltaire, Abundance at V.O Curations, and Vital Mix at Southside Shopping Centre (2024).

He will next perform in Vital Mix: Remixed at Chocolate Films Studios on Wednesday 18 June 2025 as part of Wandsworth Arts Fringe.

Free, booking required – email info@actionspace.org to reserve your place.
