Nnena Kalu presented a commissioned body of work for Manifesta 15
8 September – 24 November 2024
Tres Xemeneies (The Three Chimneys), Sant Adrià de Besòs, Barcelona
ActionSpace artist Nnena Klau exhibited a commissioned, site-sensitive sculptural installation in Manifesta 15 Barcelona Metropolitana biennial. Exhibiting in Tres Xemeneies (The Three Chimneys) an old power station, the work explored space, scale and materiality through repetitive sculptural processes using textile, tape and mixed media, contrasting with the industrial setting.
Nnena’s installations often begin with multiple compact ‘cocoons’ of textiles and paper tightly packed in tape. With an emphasis on colour and volume, these spheres are then clustered together around frameworks and structures. Nnena’s installations become an extension of her physical movements, focusing on the relationship between the artist’s body, space and sculptural forms.
