Jorell Bonnick was selected alongside four other Brent based artists to create a new public artwork for Brent Biennial’s In the House of my Love billboard commission. Jorrel’s abstract drawing was installed on high-street billboards in Brent, the home of Metroland Cultures, and in Clapham, the home of Studio Voltaire, who was a partner on this commission. The artwork was titled ‘I close my eyes and dream away’.

Jorell has been an ActionSpace artist for 5 years. The ActionSpace studio at Acava in Barham Park cultivates the talents of and forms a creative home for a community of young Brent based learning disabled artists. Jorell sustained his practice through lockdown at home, spending hours creating mark compositions on a small scale and continues to develop his work at the studio. The comission saw Jorrell’s work take prominent space in his local area and create a sense of place on the walls of the street.

The artworks selected reflected the Brent Biennial theme, ‘In the House of my Love’, which paid homage to the various histories and legacies of migration in Brent and considered the ways in which individuals and communities propose various strategies for homemaking within the context of hostile environments.
