Delve into the artwork of ActionSpace artists from across our three supported studios
In our May edition of Artist Spotlight, we are excited to feature James Heath, whose presentation, The Island of Nowhere opens later this month. This programme highlights the practices of ActionSpace artists, offering a glimpse into their work and creative process.
The Island of Nowhere
James Heath presents a new body of work exploring imagined geographies and dreamlike encounters. The drawings, paintings, and texts in The Island of Nowhere transport us through British-inspired landscapes and fictional places—misty mountains, forgotten forests, and electric cities.
Working primarily in monochrome, James uses charcoal and soft materials to build rich, textured surfaces with smudged edges and a sense of quiet mystery. The works feel like faded memories or glimpses of other worlds—part story, part dream.
“This drawing represents
The beauty of moving parts
Moving parts of the heart…”

Poetry, storytelling, music, and performance often emerge spontaneously in James’s practice. These art forms intertwine, activating the work with rhythm and emotion. His pieces shift each time they are encountered, inviting the viewer to experience them anew.

About the Artist
James Heath is a multidisciplinary artist whose dynamic practice spans performance, percussion, sculpture, collage, charcoal, and painting. Blending natural landscapes with mechanical forms, James’s work is in a constant state of evolution—layering, undoing, and reimagining as part of his intuitive process.
Working with a stripped-back colour palette, James constructs complex, layered surfaces through collage and drawing—primarily using charcoal and a rubber. These pieces explore what he calls “the complications of life,” drawing on themes such as the “rhetorical nightmare,” “Nick Cave’s hands,” and “blank like it’s the nothingness.”
Improvisation plays a key role across his practice, with storytelling, poetry, and sound merging into richly textured works that are both emotionally resonant and deeply personal.
Recent exhibitions include Open House, Studio Voltaire, 2024, Vital Mix, Wandsworth Arts Fringe, Southside Shopping Centre, 2024
