Artist Spotlight: Immanuel Adelowo
ActionSpace artist Immanuel Adelowo presents a range of paintings and carbon drawings created over the last 2 years in the ActionSpace studio at Studio Voltaire.
Titled Beyond the Depths, this Artist Spotlight explores Immanuel’s fascination with depicting highly specific, precise landscapes fused with imagined, often mystical places. These works involve the use of memory, digital images, and observations from the real world all fused into one place. His paintings develop from precisely designed, often complex compositions, with layers of intuitively applied colour and brush marks. The carbon drawings are more immediate, a detailed capture of a moment.

Immanuel frequently paints and draws open spaces that contain intricate domestic details. This produces intriguing, surreal contrasts like a small table sat in a vast mountainous landscape, or a tray of drinks offered up in a desert. His work invites us to think about what is seen and what is remembered, creating a world where an atmosphere of strangeness houses everyday objects. The movement of the sea, caves and the horizon are repeated motifs. Dark, contained spaces also reoccur, but always with the light beyond and reaching through, illuminating spaces within the darkness. There is a sense of being held but beyond is openness, light and freedom, landscapes as part of a bigger journey.

Beyond the Depths
This Artist Spotlight is accompanied by an in-person showcase of works by Immanuel at the ActionSpace studio at Studio Voltaire.
