We are thrilled to announce that ActionSpace artist Sharon Adokorach will be part of the upcoming group exhibition The Coming of Age at the Wellcome Collection.
The Coming of Age brings together over 120 works from contemporary artists such as John Coplans, Serena Korda, Suzanne Lacy, and Paula Rego, alongside historical artifacts, offering diverse perspectives on the complex narratives of aging. This exhibition challenges the assumptions surrounding life stages and invites visitors to reflect on what it means to live longer and age well.
The exhibition also engages with the intersection of art, science, and popular culture, encouraging critical reflection on how societies can better adapt to meet the needs of people as they grow older. The exhibition explores questions like: Who gets to live longer? How can society evolve to ensure that we all age better?
About the work
Sharon’s work will be displayed in the Connection and Care section, which focuses on social determinants of health, care structures, and the intersections of disability and aging. Her vibrant painting, which might appear abstract at first glance, holds a powerful message, “I love doing my shopping. My favourite thing is doing what I want.” Through this piece, Sharon communicates her desire, as a 37-year-old learning-disabled woman, to be recognized as an adult.
In the UK, people with learning disabilities receive extended support until the age of 25, but after that, many face significant challenges in transitioning to independence. Barriers in the job market, the benefits system, and society at large make this transition incredibly difficult. Sharon’s work speaks to the need for greater recognition of the rights and desires of learning-disabled individuals to live independently and be heard as equal members of society.
