ActionSpace ran Independence through Art in partnership with The Camden Society and the October Gallery. The aim was to develop a model for an accessible life skills course, using visual arts activities as a tool for learning through doing. The target group was adults with all types and levels of learning disabilities, particularly those with limited verbal skills.
ActionSpace’s specialist artist tutor worked with a life skills tutor from The Camden Society to develop and run the course. A steering group, including two learners, advised on the course model, monitored progress and gave feedback. Two volunteer session assistants supported the learners during sessions.
Independence through Art was funded by the Community Learning and Innovation Fund.
